What are the safety considerations for the Easy Scaler?
Please see our Safety & Operation page.
How many fish will it scale?
Easy Scaler will scale approximately 40-50 hand-sized fish at a time. (The larger the individual fish, the less you can put in).
What species of fish will it scale?
Easy Scaler was designed for scaling panfish. Now that's a broad term that means different things to different people, so we try to provide a list based on experience. (If you own an Easy Scaler and have used it to scale fish we haven't listed, please contact us and let us know! ) Here's what we know:
It works amazingly well on the following species:
Red ear sunfish
Long ear sunfish
Red breast sunfish
Spotted Sunfish
Pumpkinseed
Bluegill
White crappie
Black crappie
Mullet
We've found that Easy Scaler does not work well on:
Largemouth bass
How long does the Easy Scaler take to scale fish?
This depends on several factors: quantity, size, and species. A small batch of little fish might be scaled in about 8 minutes, where a large batch of big fish might take more like 25 minutes. As you use your Easy Scaler regularly, you'll soon get a good idea of how long it takes for the types of fish you most commonly catch.
Does the Easy Scaler remove 100% of the scales?
Many fish will come out with 100% of the scales removed, but it is not uncommon to find a few scales on some fish-- maybe a few on the belly & back that will take a few swipes with a pocket knife to touch up before heading and gutting.
99% is what we state as the effectiveness, because that's the reality. To our knowledge, there is no automatic fish scaler on the market that will remove all of the scales all of the time, despite claims to the otherwise. All you have to do is read the product reviews of our competitors to see the reality. We believe that Easy Scaler does it better and faster than our competitors, and we don't have to exaggerate to sell our product.
Can the Easy Scaler do anything else?
Yes! Once the fish have been scaled, gutted and headed, toss them back into the Easy Scaler for a few more minutes and it will wash out the body cavities! This gets the fish cleaner than you ever thought possible. Many of our customers have said that fish cleaned in the Easy Scaler taste better.
We've also seen the Easy Scaler used to peel new potatoes and wash collard greens.
What kind of motor is on the Easy Scaler?
The Easy Scaler is equipped with a very durable 25-watt brushless induction motor. It has a beefy 5/8" keyed shaft, heat-treated metal gears, and large diameter bearings for longer life. It has a sealed, milled aluminum body and stainless steel screws (it can handle getting wet). It requires zero maintenance and it is rated for 10,000 hours of continuous use. (That's around 40,000 loads of fish!) Easy Scaler's motor comes with a 2-year factory warranty.
We have tried to source our motors from the US, but all the options we have found would require doubling the price of the Easy Scaler. We source our motors from Oriental Motor. They're made in Japan, and they're very high quality. We've completely disassembled the motor and are quite impressed with the attention to detail and the quality throughout. These motors are robust and well-made.
Why is the power cord so short?
We want to keep the connection between the Easy Scaler and the extension cord off the wet ground. A short cord prevents that.
Why isn't there a power switch?
We've found that any power switch that matches the Easy Scaler in ruggedness and longevity raises the price above what we want to charge. The simple plug-and-go method eliminates a "prone-to-fail" part while allowing us to keep the price of the unit as low as possible.
